Championship Prayer
In the celebration following Carolina's 75-70 victory over Illinois for the National Championship, Seniors Jawad Williams, Jackie Manuel and Melvin Scott shared a final on-court huddle for a prayer. A moment later, Coach Roy Williams made his way over to them, and they welcomed him to their embrace. It was a moment of triumph - not only for the game and championship just won, but for three young men who weathered an 8-20 season as freshmen and ended up on top as seniors. It was most definitely a Tar Heel Moment.
In honor of these three young men who exemplified the Carolina Way in so many ways and the Coach who helped them reach the pinnacle of success, Stephen F. Hanson has commemorated this great moment in Carolina Basketball.
Eight Points, Seventeen Seconds
"Eight Points, Seventeen Seconds" is the second release in the Tar Heel Moments series by Stephen F. Hanson. This print captures Walter Davis desperation shot that completed the most miraculous comeback in Carolina Basketball. The exceptional detail throughout the print is highlighted by renderings of the Carmichael scoreboard. The first illustrates the score of the game when it seemed utterly hopeless - Duke up 86-78 with only 17 seconds remaining. The second depicts the tie score with no time remaining after Dean Smith, Bobby Jones, Mitch Kupchak and Walter Davis worked their magic -setting the stage for a thrilling overtime victory. This piece is truly an item that no Tar Heel will want to be without.
